On February 26, 2026, the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) published online an overview of the patent and trademark filings it received in 2025.
Patent
According to the TIPO’s statistics, a total of 71,965 patent applications were filed in 2025, representing a 1% decrease compared with the previous year (72,742 filings), possibly due to the impact of the trade war.
Of the three types of patent applications, invention applications increased by 0.8% compared with 2024 (the same comparison applies below), with the main momentum coming from filings by foreign applicants.

Broken down by applicants’ nationalities, the number of invention applications filed by domestic applicants was 19,511. Invention applications filed by foreign applicants continued to increase, reaching a new record of 31,719 filings, representing a growth of 1.5%. The growth in utility model applications filed by foreign applicants was even more significant, rising by 17% to a total of 1,426 filings.
Filings from Taiwanese applicants dropped by 2.7% in 2025, totaling 35,277, suggesting that domestic applicants may have been more adversely affected by the trade war than foreign applicants.
Among invention patent applications filed by non-Taiwanese applicants, Japanese applicants continued to rank first in 2025, with 12,524 filings, followed by U.S. applicants with 6,954 filings. Applicants from the PRC ranked third, with 3,703 filings; Korean applicants ranked fourth, with 3,346 filings; and German applicants ranked fifth, with 1,051 filings.
The TIPO’s initiatives to speed up patent examination prove to be fruitful. In 2025, it only took the TIPO 8.0 months on average to issue a first substantive examination opinion, and 13.8 months on average to complete the entire substantive examination proceeding, both counting from the date on which the substantive examination starts.
Trademark
Trademark filings continued to grow in 2025 despite the trade war, reaching 97,411 applications and 124,242 classes, representing increases of 7.5% and 10.4%, respectively, compared with 2024.
Of these applications, 75,573 applications were filed by domestic applicants, marking an 8.9% increase over 2024, while 21,838 applications were filed by foreign entities, reflecting a 4.2% increase over the same period.
Excluding filings by Taiwanese applicants, trademark filings in 2025 were mainly contributed by applicants from the following five jurisdictions, four of which are Asian markets: PRC (5,802 filings, up 3.2%), Japan (3,435 filings, up 1.1%), United States (3,014 filings, up 6.8%), South Korea (2,394 filings, a significant increase of 24.8%), and Hong Kong (1,070 filings, down 12.8%).
